Reductionism and Holism
Reading
The reading discusses two perception of the world, the philosophical views of reductionism and holism, and their meaning and examples. A sentence in the reading that caught my attention is "We also recognize that the more we focus on one, the more the other becomes blurred." (Raman, 2005). This sentence perfectly explains how there is no right answer to the question of which perception is right. Furthermore, the "Power of Ten" is a good example of how both perceptions can be right. Whether you see the world as one whole system or as infinite amount of systems that make up the universe. This is a lens that should be taken and used in design more than it is being used now.
Lecture
In the lecture, we discussed the meaning of both concepts, reductionism and holism as well as their relation to design. As designers we have to be able to look at the world in both perspectives in order to understand the people and the environment around us. We should be able to zoom in and out to see what the target market will need, want and see in our solutions. I think that this topic is not as emphasized in design as it should be as people tend to forget about design sensibilities which are ultimately connected to how the target market will see and perseve the solution.
